CABASA! is a percussion quintet for 5 players performing on cabasa. The cabasa, similar to the shekere, is a percussion instrument that is constructed with loops of steel ball chain wrapped around a wide cylinder. The cylinder is fixed to a long, narrow wooden or plastic handle. Cabasas come in a variety of sizes and CABASA! requires three different sizes of varying relative pitch. I prefer the Meinl cabasas. They are the best!
CABASA! is published by Musicon Publications and was premiered by Jose Aponte, Quincy Davis, Christopher Deane, Mark Ford and Paul Rennick on Ford’s faculty percussion recital at the University of North Texas on November 13, 2018.
